VIRMP deadlines

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE VIRMP SCHEDULE

Every year, the VIRMP website publishes the schedule for the upcoming Match. It is of utmost importance that you familiarize yourself with it and understand what it means, how to prepare, and what to do in and for each stage/deadline. We discuss these in other posts, and go into great detail in our e-Book, How to Navigate the Matching Program.

Bottom line, if you don't pay attention to the VIRMP deadlines, you won't be able to plan ahead, and in some cases, actually almost miss a deadline if you're really not paying attention. This adds unnecessary stress, and even lead to application errors/mistakes that can cost you a position in the upcoming Match.

VIRMP 2021 Schedule

LET'S LOOK AT EACH DEADLINE FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE (THE APPLICANT)

  • Program Entry - Nothing to do here. Programs start posting their positions.
  • Search Programs - You can start looking at the few positions that start popping up, but mostly a waste of your time.
  • End of program entry - Last day for institutions to add programs. There will be a decent number of programs listed, but no the final list.
  • Applicants able to access website - Finally you can review all programs! Although it says you can rank programs, DO NOT do that!!
  • Application deadline - This is the first date you must remember! Your application must be completed and you must have applied to programs by this date. Check this post on the difference between applying and ranking programs.
  • Applicant rank order lists due/End of withdrawal period - Second date to remember - No excuses. You must submit you rank order list by this date. This is also the deadline for you to pull out of the Match. Very important: you can only match to programs you ranked! Plus, you don't have to rank all the programs you initially applied to.
  • Program rank order lists due/End program withdrawal period - Nothing for you to do here. Deadline for programs to rank you and to withdraw their positions from the Match without consequences.
  • Match Results Date - Big day is here!! You get to login and find out if you matched or not. If not, chin up, you still have a chance! Read this.
  • Open positions list available to the public - you do not want to wait for this date. If you didn't match on Match day, you are entered into the unmatched applicant list. Login to your account so you can see the open positions. Barely any positions will still be available when the list is available to the public.

TAKE HOME POINTS

  • Remember each deadline. It's your responsibility and there's not going back if you miss them
  • You can only match to programs you rank
  • You don't have to rank all the programs you applied to
  • Be familiar with what happens on Match day.  Your ability to match might depend on it. Read our posts, our book or obtain information elsewhere. No excuses!

After last year's success, we're now publicly offering coaching sessions on the Matching Program.

If you are on the fence about doing an internship, you can always put your APPLICATIONS in by early December. Then, if you decide you don’t want to do an internship, you can just not rank any. You won’t be entered into the system, so you won’t be matched. If you decide you DO want to do an internship, then you put your rank list in. It gives you another month to consider your future.

It’s important to keep the application deadline in mind when thinking about your letters of recommendation, as well! I have some complementary advice on that, including structuring your senior year with this schedule in mind: http://vetducator.com/mastering-the-internship-application-timeline/

Totally agree – there is zero reason to rush in to register, apply and rank programs! Be familiar with the deadlines and plan ahead, which includes letters of recommendation. Always give your letters writers enough time! You don’t want those to be rushed.
